Canal and Narrowboat insurance, brokers & insurance companies
Marine Insurance is compulsory on narrowboats and most other canal and waterways craft. Licences may not be issued without valid insurance cover.
Canal boat and narrowboat insurance differs from other marine insurance in a number of ways. For instance most marine policies expect boats to be laid up out of the water during the winter months, narrowboat policies usually offer year round in water cover. Narrowboat policies may be limited to no tidal waters.
- As with car insurance, narrowboat annual premiums are dependent upon the level of cover provided and on the replacement cost of the boat, in the case of fully comprehensive insurance. Many offer no claims bonuses.
- Policies may be dependent on the canal boat having a valid Boat Safety Scheme Certificate and in the case of older boats a recent marine surveyors report may be required.
- Most policies will limit cover to non tidal waters in the UK and will not cover such activities as towing other boats, or towing water skiers!
