The Trent and Mersey Canal is a popular cruising canal with narrowboat hire firms conveniently based along its 90 miles. It offers lots to see and do, and its connections with other canals & rivers open up plenty of holiday cruising route choices for a short break or longer holiday. A narrow canal, except for Burton on Trent to Derwent Mouth (River Trent). It takes about a week to cruise the full length which includes 73 locks and 4 tunnels. Allow 2 days to explore the short but scenic Caldon Canal.
- Enjoy lots of locks, tunnels and a wide range of scenery, heritage and attractions on this long cross-country canal.
- Look out for the Anderton lift, the Potteries & Wedgewood Museum, salt mining towns, 'Heartbreak Hill' locks and the spooky Harecastle Tunnel, plus lots of beautiful scenery.
- Cruising routes include 'out and back' up the picturesque Caldon Canal, the Macclesfield Canal into the Peak District or exploring the River Weaver 'flashes' or upper River Trent.
