Narrowboat Hire – Bridgewater Canal

A hire boat cruise along the Bridgewater Canal takes you on a level route through pleasant countryside overlooking the River Mersey. The canal is deep, straight and wide and cruising can be surprisingly rapid!

  • Look out for the Barton Tank, a girder swing-bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal which still swings out of the way to allow sea-going ships into Manchester Docks.
  • Take the Leigh Branch to meet up with the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Wigan, or the Rochdale Canal which climbs the Pennines into Yorkshire or forms part of the popular Cheshire Ring (below).
  • Explore the Castlefields basins in central Manchester, a fascinating complex of warehouses and wharves beneath the overhead railway lines and modern tower blocks.
  • See the original coal mines at Worseley where coal was brought out from an underground maze of waterways on narrow craft called ‘Starvationers’. The improved transport halved the price of coal in Manchester, making the Duke of Bridgewater a very rich man and helping kick-start the industrial revolution.
