The map begins in Weston, Staffordshire, located just above Great Haywood Junction where the Staffs & Worcs. Canal meets the Trent & Mersey. The route then takes you southeastwards towards Fradley Junction, and the Coventry Canal. Continuing along the canal, you will pass through Burton upon Trent, a town steeped in a long-standing brewing tradition. The canal is ideal for wide-beam craft from Burton to the Upper Trent at Shardlow.
The river flows towards Long Eaton and Trent Lock, which is a junction for a number of waterways. If you head south, you’ll reach the River Soar, and if you go north, you’ll come across the Erewash Canal. As it progresses, the Trent eventually departs from its navigable route at Beeston Lock and enters the Beeston and Nottingham Canals, leading to the centre of Nottingham, before rejoining the Trent at Trent Bridge. The river then exits the city and makes its way northeast towards Newark-On-Trent.
As you journey along the River Trent, you’ll come across Cromwell Lock just after Newark-On-Trent, where the river becomes tidal. 15 miles further on is Torksey Junction, from where the Trent flows towards Gainsborough and eventually meets the River Humber at Trent Falls. To continue your voyage, head southeast through Torksey Lock and onto the Fossdyke Navigation. You’ll enjoy 11 miles of lock-free cruising along a waterway that was constructed by the Romans, leading you to the centre of historic Lincoln.
