Narrowboat Hire – Macclesfield Canal

A hire boat holiday along the Macclesfield Canal is full of interest, from the unusual ‘flyover’ junction with the Trent and Mersey at Hardings Wood, passing the Victorian folly of Mow Cop and timber framed Little Moreton Hall, climbing the beautiful locks at Bosley to and the interesting junction with the Peak Forest Canal at Marple in the Pennine hills.

Canalside Mill at Bollington

Canalside Mill at Bollington

  • Enjoy a very scenic cruise, along the edge of the Pennines, with fine views over the Cheshire Plain towards Manchester.
  • There are the beautiful stone cottages and imposing canalside cotton and silk mills, many now finding new use as enterprise centres or studio apartments.
  • Look out for Mow Cop folly, Alderley Edge and the amazing timber framed Little Moreton Hall.
  • Explore Macclesfield and Congleton, affluent now and well kept but still with a splattering of traditional shops, good beer pubs and Pennine charm.
  • The 12 narrow locks are easy to use and the 26 miles from Hardings Wood to Marple can be covered in 2 days, but why rush through such a delightlful setting?
  • Part of the Cheshire Ring, or you could take a relaxing trip up to Whalley Bridge on the Peak Forest Canal. Then there’s a much less relaxing trip for the energetic crews on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal over the Pennines into Yorkshire!
