Narrowboat Hire – Huddersfield Narrow Canal

Spend a week’s hire boat holiday crossing the Pennines on the short and steep Huddersfield Narrow Canal, climbing onto glorious wild Pennine moorlands and experiencing the highest, longest and deepest canal tunnel in the country. Hard work but worth it!


  • The Huddersfield Narrow Canal runs from a junction with the the Ashton Canal in east Manchester over the Pennines to join the short Huddersfield Broad Canal in Huddersfield which leads to the Aire and Calder Navigation, Leeds and York and Ripon via the extensive network of Yorkshire Navigations and rivers.
  • The Huddersfield Narrow Canal is the shortest of the three canals that cross the Pennine hills, only 20 miles long with two tunnels and 74 narrow locks, 1 week to cruise. It was reopened after nearly 60 years dereliction in 2001.
  • Standedge Tunnel is 17,000 feet long, one-third bare rock, 638 feet below ground and 645 feet above sea level. Boaters take their own boats through with a CRT ‘chaperone’ onboard.
  • The HNC can be a challenging cruise. Its rapid restoration left ongoing problems with lock equipment, the state of the channel and the resulting water shortages. With so many locks close together cruising the canal is always hard work, especially in deeper boats.
  • The HNC is part of the South Pennine Ring returning on the Rochdale Canal and can be included in the full Pennine Ring coming back on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
