Narrowboat Hire – Rochdale Canal and Calder & Hebble Navigation

Hiring a boat to cross the Rochdale Canal is wonderful journey for energetic boaters, especially as part of a ‘Pennine Ring’. To climb the valleys on each side of magnificent rounded slopes of the Pennine moors the canal, railways and roads all pack tightly together into the narrow valleys.

  • The Rochdale Canal links Lancashire to Yorkshire and Leeds, via the 23 mile Calder and Hebble Navigation.
  • 92 broad locks in just 33 miles, including Tuel Lane Lock, the deepest in the UK. What more could a hire boat crew want?
  • Amazing Pennine scenery, valleys, mills, stone built towns all the way from Manchester to Sowerby Bridge.
  • Squeeze along crowded Pennine valleys filled with houses, industry, roads, river, canal and George Stephenson’s Manchester to Leeds Railway.
  • Explore Hebden Bridge, ‘the Glastonbury of the North’, filled with artists and musicians and interesting shops.
  • Choice of 2 circular Pennine routes via the Huddersfield Narrow Canal or the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, hire a boat for two or three weeks at least. A handspike is need to operate locks on the Calder & Hebble.

Canal Rings

There are two circular cross Pennine Canal Rings which include the Rochdale Canal. The shorter South Pennine Ring forms a loop with the Ashton Canal and Huddersfield Narrow Canal. It has over 180 locks and allow at least 2 weeks. The North Pennine Ring is longer and includes the Calder and Hebble, Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the Bridgewater Canal, allow at least 3 weeks.
