Narrowboat Hire – Chesterfield Canal

The Chesterfield Canal is a long way from other narrow canals, so hiring a boat from a base on the canal, even if you have a boat of your own, can make a lot of sense!

You won’t need to brave the tricky entrance from the fast flowing and busy River Trent, (below) and you’ll be enchanted by its 35 miles of meandering rural waterways. Plus the canal has a kick in the tail, 23 locks in one mile if that’s your thing!

  • Quiet, peaceful and relaxing cruising, a long way from the rest of the busy narrow canal network and gently locked for most of its route.
  • Lots of interesting restoration to see, 12 miles of canals plus 37 locks, 11 bridges and 2 new marinas!
  • For the lock enthusiasts the award winning Thorpe locks are part of an (optional) 23 lock climb in just one mile, including 2 double staircases and 2 triples!
  • Restoration progress – 12 miles of the Chesterfield Canal have been restored along with 37 locks and 11 bridges and 2 new marinas have been built. Under nine miles are left to restore. The Chesterfield Canal Trust hopes to complete the restoration by 2027, the canal’s 250th anniversary.
