Shropshire Union Canal Pubs & Canalside Inns

The Shropshire Union Canal crosses a lot of very rural open countryside, so you might not expect there to be many canalside pubs along its sixty mile length.

canalside pubHowever you’d be wrong! The Shropshire Union was a busy route from the North West to the Midlands and was heavily used by working narrowboats right up to the end of commercial carrying. Along its length were many hostelries, providing overnight stabling for the horses and a place for the boat people to relax and socialise. Many isolated canal pubs still survive, some now relying on their summer holiday boaters to keep them going through the quieter winters.
