Before the holiday boats came along the Llangollen was essentially a rural canal, nowhere near as busy with long distance boats as the neighbouring Shropshire Union or Trent and Mersey Canals which were part of major canal north to south routes. With only local trade there was little need for frequent watering holes for men and horses! Most of the pubs listed here are in towns such as Whitchurch, Ellesmere and Llangollen, not canalside. Long stretches of the Llangollen Canal are without pubs within walking distance so plan your journey carefully!
