Narrowboat Hire – River Severn, River Avon and Droitwich Canal

Hiring a boat to cruise the wide River Severn or meandering River Avon is a wonderful experience, quite different to canal cruising. Each river can be cruised in about three days. The rivers also enable a number of longer midland cruising routes, including the circular Avon Ring, and the much shorter Droitwich Ring.

 

The River Avon at Tewkesbury

  • The River Severn, Britain’s longest river, rises in mid Wales and flows 220 miles to the Bristol Channel. It is navigable from a few miles above Stourport 45 miles down to Gloucester.
  • The Warwickshire River Avon meanders through beautiful watermeadows above Tewkesbury, famous for it’s abbey and fine buildings, and winds on amidst willow trees through the Vale of Evesham to Stratford upon Avon where you can moor by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
  • The recently restored Droitwich Canal runs from the Severn to the Worcester & Birmingham Canal.
  • The Gloucester & Sharpness Ship Canal, a cruise alongside the wide Severn Estuary down to Sharpness Docks through manned swing bridges with their classical keepers cottages is well worthwhile.
  • The large locks on the Severn are electrically operated by lock-keepers, you share the locks with other boats holding on to chains on the lock side.
  • Locks on the Avon you operate yourself and come in a variety of sizes and shapes, some can seem a little unusual at first!
