Narrowboat Hire – Montgomery Canal

Enjoy a few days peaceful hireboat cruising along the Montgomery Canal as it meanders through isolated Shropshire countryside towards the Welsh border, you’ll discover a different canal world to the busy Llangollen Canal you have just left!

  • Restoration of this once derelict canal is slowly moving south towards Llanymynech, currently cruisable for about 7 miles through 8 locks from the junction with the Llangollen Canal at Frankton, a relaxed 2 days each way.
  • The northern length was reopened in the 1990’s after abandonment in 1944. The canal originally ran 32 miles from Frankton down to Newtown (Powys).
  • Sections are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest and offline open water nature reserves have been built at Aston to help preservation. The long abandonment allowed the canal to subside back in to nature, still often looking more like a river, with bullrushes and water plants and an overgrown towpath sprinkled with orchids.
  • Bringing powered craft back presented environmental challenges so daily boat numbers through Frankton locks are controlled, passage must be booked in advance. Below the locks are popular moorings and facilities.
  • Apart from the outstanding natural beauty of the reopened section there are interesting Shropshire Union warehouses, especially at Rednal which also has a transhipment basin where canal boats and the Great Western Railway once swapped cargoes. More interesting heritage can be found at Maesbury, also the popular Canal Central tea room and accommodation. The Aston Nature Reserve is worth a visit.
  • The isolated 17 mile Welshpool section is underused and weedy, but the towpath offers fine walks and cycling. Reopening down to Newtown is complicated by main road crossings at canal level.
