Canal and River Trust winter mooring sites and rates have been announced. Rates range from £6.70 to £18 a metre a month, a rise of 3% over last year plus the creation of a new Band 0 for moorings that were very popular last year. Which means from about £600 to over £1,600 for a 65 foot boat for the winter.
The Canal and River Trust’s Winter moorings will be available from 1 November 2018 to 16 March 2019. Bookings be will open from 6am on Wednesday 3 October and can be made through the Trust’s boat licensing site. Both continuous cruisers and boaters with a home mooring will be able to take up a winter mooring. However CRT say that boaters who are not meeting their licence requirements may not be eligible.
All winter mooring permits will be charged at a ‘per metre, per month’ rate, and boaters will be able to book the spots in increments of one month, or sixteen days in March 2019. The Trust’s winter moorings are divided into five price bands reflecting each site’s relative attractiveness, for example location and facilities, and to ensure the Trust stays in line with the pricing of both private mooring operators and its own long-term mooring sites. This year the Trust has added an additional upper band (band 0) for five of the most popular sites – Kensal Green and Brentford in London, and Dundas West on the Kennet & Avon – that saw extremely high demand last year. 16 other popular sites have also moved up to a higher price band. Following no price increases last year, the four other mooring price bands (bands 1 – 4) have this year risen by 3%.
Band 0 – £18 per metre/per month – as band one, but with extremely high demand on day one in 2017/18.
Band 1 – £16 per metre/per month – a visitor mooring site with mooring rings or bollards, in/within walking distance of a popular village/town/location with local amenities. There are good facilities at or nearby (which can include most of the following; water, elsan, pumpout and rubbish facilities) and good public transport links (for example the site is close to a station/public transport routes or, in London, is in travel zone 1-4).
Band 2– £13.90 per metre/per month – a visitor mooring site with mooring rings or bollards, in/within walking distance of a popular village/town/location with local amenities. This site has good facilities (which can include some of the following; water, elsan, pumpout and rubbish facilities).
Band 3 – £10.30 per metre/per month – this could be a visitor mooring or towpath site with a few facilities on site or within a short cruise. The site is likely to be quite close to a village or town.
Band 4 – £6.70 per metre/per month – a quieter towpath location, which doesn’t have any facilities on site.
