New Inland Water and Marina Safety management Courses

2025 01 14Until recently, there has been a considerable lack of occupational water safety training for individuals working in, on, or near inland, non-tidal waters, including those involved with small vessels under 24 meters long. Additionally, the marina and yacht harbour sector, which is influenced by tidal conditions, lacks specialised training programs tailored to meet its distinct needs. Despite the inherent dangers associated with these environments, there are no standardised or readily available vocational courses designed to equip operators with the requisite safety skills approved or accredited by recognised professional or trade organisations.

In response to this identified need, Birmingham & Midland Marine Services Ltd, in collaboration with Atlantic Crest, has developed two courses specifically for individuals operating in proximity to water margins: ‘Inland Water Safety Management’ and ‘Marina Water Safety Management (Coastal/Tidal)’ on behalf of the British Marine Federation. These courses are accredited by the Institute of Search and Technical Rescue and provide participants with essential knowledge and practical skills necessary for making informed safety decisions and effectively responding to emergencies, including life-saving rescue techniques.

These courses address a significant deficiency in current training offerings and present a comprehensive solution for organisations seeking to protect their personnel in aquatic environments. Additionally, they assist employers in fulfilling their statutory obligations by ensuring that staff members are adequately trained and prepared for the risks associated with working near or in water.

DSC 2244 1The Inland Water Safety Management course is tailored for those operating in non-tidal environments, focusing on rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs, boatyards, and marinas. It emphasises risk identification, site-specific safety planning, and practical emergency response techniques suited to inland, non-tidal conditions. Participants will gain the competence to assess dynamic water conditions and implement effective safety measures in both routine and high-risk scenarios.

The Marina Water Safety Management (Coastal/Tidal) course is designed for individuals working in and around coastal or tidally affected marinas, harbours, and waterfront infrastructure. It addresses the unique risks related to tidal influences, vessel movements, confined walkways, and public access. Participants will acquire the skills to manage safety in bustling marine environments, respond to water entry incidents, and apply rescue techniques specific to marina and harbour contexts.
