The Warwickshire Ring

The Warwickshire Ring can be done in a week but two weeks allows more exploration to be done, places to see like Warwick and Leamington Spa, to explore like the BCN and to detour along like the Statford Canal to Statford upon Avon.

Hatton 21 locks with distinctive paddle gear

  • The Coventry Canal from Fazeley Junction runs through what used to be the Warwickshire coalfield down to Coventry, now mainly returned to nature. The lock free Ashby Canal is well worth a detour to spend a peaceful few days.
  • The North Oxford Canal originally had lots of twists and turns but it was shortened by cutting out loops which can still be seen, as can the original Newbold Tunnel. Hillmorton locks were paired to speed passage and they are still very busy.
  • The Grand Union Canal from Braunston through Warwick has a hard climb up 63 locks to get onto the Birmingham plateau. The flight of 21 wide and double locks at Hatton can look very daunting! Explore Warwick and Leamington Spa, and turn at Kingswood Junction to visit Stratford upon Avon.
  • The Birmingham & Fazeley Canal heads out of Birmingham through industrial estates but reaches farmlands after passing the tangle of motorway lanes and feeders near Curdworth. There is a sharp right turn at Fazeley Junction.
