Heron Map – Warwick Ring, Ashby Canal and up to Fradley

This Heron Map offers comprehensive coverage of the Warwickshire Ring, Ashby-de-la-Zouch Canal, and up to Fradley Junction on the Trent & Mersey Canal. Suitable for both waterways and leisure users, it provides useful and relevant information about the waterways without neglecting other recreational activities. The map features detailed information panels and photographs, enhancing its overall value.

This helpful map is ideal for anyone exploring the Warwickshire ring. It includes detailed town plans of Braunston, Warwick, Kingswood, Tamworth, Atherstone, Nuneaton, and Coventry at a scale of 1:50000. Additionally, it offers an extra plan of the heart of Birmingham at a scale of 1:10000.

The map provides valuable information for boating enthusiasts, including navigation tips, historical insights, and contact details for visitor moorings, marinas, boatyards, and boat rental centres. The guide also highlights facilities for boat users, such as sailing and boat clubs, shops, post offices, and distance markers. Additionally, tourists can find useful information about tourist information centres, popular landmarks, pubs, nature reserves, parks, churches, national cycle routes, long-distance paths, public toilets, and caravan and camping sites.

The Warwickshire Ring comprises the Grand Union Canal, from Napton Junction to Birmingham, the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal, the Coventry Canal and the northern section of the Oxford Canal, from Hawkesbury Junction to Napton Junction.

This scenic route spans 100 miles and combines peaceful rural and urban cruising. While it’s possible to complete in a week, it’s better to take a leisurely trip over two weeks to experience the delights along the way fully. Visitors can explore the beautiful Royal Leamington Spa, the medieval castle of Warwick, and also dock in central Birmingham’s Gas Street Basin for a cultural, culinary and shopping experience. For those seeking adventure, visiting Drayton Manor near Tamworth or the town’s indoor ski slope is a must. A more relaxed diversion is to continue cruising up the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal from Fazeley Junction to Fradley Junction, where the Trent and Mersey Canal and the northern section of the Coventry Canal meet. After an 11-mile lock-free cruise, unwind with a drink at The Swan before returning to Fazeley Junction to continue along the eastern side of the Warwickshire Ring.

Travelling on the eastern side of the ring offers almost uninterrupted cruising, with only a few locks to impede progress, such as the Glascote Locks, the flight at Atherstone, Hillmorton’s paired locks, and the stop lock at Hawkesbury Junction. One of the highlights of this route is the 22-mile Ashby-de-la-Zouch Canal, a picturesque waterway that winds through rolling countryside, passing by the outskirts of Hinckley and a handful of small villages. The canal also takes you through Bosworth Field, the site of the historic final battle of The War of the Roses, which has now been turned into a country park with a heritage centre that offers exhibitions, re-enactments, falconry displays, and guided battlefield walks.

From Hawkesbury Junction, you can follow the Coventry Canal to the city, which is named after it. This picturesque canal route spans 5 miles and is free of locks, adorned with various artworks along the way. The journey concludes at a restored basin near the city centre.
