A Boy Off The Bank

“A Boy Off The Bank” tells the story of the canals in England during the Second World War, as well as the humour and resilience of the people who lived and worked on them.

This poignant and heartwarming tale focuses on the struggles of an arduous and challenging job, as seen from a narrow boat’s back cabin by a young boy. A Boy Off the Bank is the first book in a trilogy (A Girl at the Tiller, A Boy Off The Bank, and The New Number One).

He has taken all that his miserable life can throw at him – beaten mentally and physically by his drunken father, treated like a skivvy by his hard-working mother. The final blow is when his pet dog is taken away as well; this leads him to commit suicide on a January night in 1940. However, things don’t go as planned…
