In the era before steam, railways made names like Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Robert Stephenson famous; there was an engineering ‘Colossus’ who paved the way for future projects.
These include not only the Menai Bridge but also other masonry and iron bridges, the Ellesmere Canal with its aqueducts at Pontcysyllte and Chirk (both now part of a World Heritage Site), the Caledonian Canal cutting through Scotland’s Great Glen, and the A5 road that runs between London and Holyhead.
