During the second half of the Victorian era, canal narrowboats were often decorated with painted designs, which made boatpeople proud of their vessels. When married boatmen started bringing their wives to live on board in the small cabins, the women likely wanted to make their homes comfortable, but the decorations had to be practical and not take up valuable space. Crochet was ideal for this and it could also have practical uses as well as being decorative.
Cabin Crochet of the Inland Waterways 2
This second booklet contains ten more traditional crochet patterns used in the decoration of the cabin of a narrow boat. The patterns are taken from old laces or adapted out of print pattern books contemporary with the trading narrow boats. Several designs are from lace on display at the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port.
