A Walker’s Guide to the Cromford Canal

Discover the history of the Cromford Canal with “A Walk Through History”, edited by Friends of the Cromford Canal archivist Hugh Potter and advised by Ken Brockway. This guide takes you along the current canal route and shows you what it looked like in the past.

Much had changed since the 1960s when parts of the canal were sold, demolished, opencast, or infilled. While most of the canal was abandoned in 1944, the top 5½ miles from Ambergate to Cromford remain intact thanks to British Waterways donating it to Derbyshire County Council.
