Castle on the Grand Union Leicester Line
Guide To Leicester Castle
Leicester Section - Built in 1088 on a popular route of travel (where four or more roads converge). It contained underground dungeons for imprisoning the more dangerous criminals, and also a magnificent aisled hall in the bailey some of which remains. Leicester was one of the larger baronies in the 13th century and although the order went out for the castle to be torn down it must have been built up again soon afterwards.

I really enjoyed my visit here many years ago when I was 19!

I visited early in the morning so it wasn’t open to the public yet. I was able to walk around the grounds and enjoy the unimpeded atmosphere. There was a soccer ball that was lost in a thicket of bushes near a garden. I was going to navigate the hill to retrieve it but it looked dangerous and I thought better of it.

Great historical place. It’s definitely worth the visit, if you get a chance to visit the Heritage Sundays on the last Sunday of the month. Or even to the ghost tour.

A beautiful spot in the city

If you are a fan of historic places, you’ll love it here. In the photos it’s not the Castle, but St.Mary de Castro Church which is nearby.
