Castle on the Llangollen Canal

Guide To Holt Castle

Holt Castle, located on the Welsh-English border, is a testament to medieval architectural prowess.

Built in the 13th century, this formidable fortress once dominated the landscape with its imposing sandstone walls and strategic location overlooking the River Dee.

The castle’s design exemplifies the pinnacle of medieval military engineering, featuring a unique pentagonal layout with massive corner towers that provide unparalleled defence capabilities. Despite centuries of wear and partial dismantling, Holt Castle’s remaining structures continue to captivate visitors with their intricate stonework and historical significance. Today, as visitors explore the ruins and walk along the castle’s perimeter, they can’t help but marvel at the enduring legacy of this remarkable piece of medieval architecture, which continues to inspire and educate centuries after its construction.

Not much to look at, but a great walk and great if your into medieval ruins! Also has a cool view over the river Dee.

Sadly, very little here at Holt remains of the once grand five tower medieval Holt Castle, (Castrum Leonis or Castle Lyons) apart from the feel of the place, the scale of size, it’s location in connection with the River Dee and small amounts of masonry around some of the old courtyard.

In fact there is more of the castles sandstone just across the border at Eaton Hall, than what is actually left of the ruins itself… But that’s another story.

The history of the Castle is a truly fantastic journey through some dark times of that period and from it’s completion date in 1311, right up until it was finally demolished around 1683; It’s past events have played a big part of both Welsh and English history and even shaped many things of how they are today.

A really interesting place, but if you read it’s history before you pay a visit, then the place will be much more appealing. Because there is not a great deal left here, whichis a great shame.

But history is history, we can not change the past both good and bad. But we can hopefully learn from it.

Nice and pleasant short walk to the castle and surrounding areas.

Sadly not much left of a castle that has a suprising amount of history.

Unfortunately not a lot to see, parking is an issue and all the information boards dotted around the ruins had been broken/defaced.

Seems to be of more interest for somewhere for the local teens to hang out, pleasant surroundings with a walk along the river Dee but I doubt I’d visit again.

What a find. Little gem. Lovely little walk along the river.

What people don’t often realise this with this place. Is the original Castle was massive. Like massive. The main road that runs past it is the line of the walls.

Not lots to see what’s left here. But the village is good to visit as there is some really nice little cafés.
