Once inside the castle, you’ll find yourself in The Great Hall. This is where prisoners were held before they were executed. There are still pellet sized holes peppering the walls from when an arrow was shot to help get rid of claustrophobia. Prisoners were tied to a wall and forced to stand there for several days. If anyone dared to close their eyes, they’d be shot with an arrow or beaten severely.

There’s also a dungeon that is said to hold the world’s only surviving Iron Maiden. In some dungeons, prisoners were held in a device referred to as an Iron Maiden. It was basically a box made of iron with spikes, and when the door was shut, the spikes would pierce through your body. It’s a wonder they didn’t die from shock.

Then there’s a long hallway leading to a big room with spears lining both sides of the walls. At one point in time, these spears were dipped in poison, which would be released when someone tried to pass. They were successful in killing several people, including Thomas Stanley who became the Earl of Derby after defeating Richard III during the Battle of Bosworth Field.

There are some rooms that date back to medieval times. These rooms include The Dungeon which was used as a prison for some of England’s most dangerous criminals, The Medieval Undercroft which was used as a storage area for some of the castle’s more valuable objects, and The Great Kitchen which was used to prepare meals for some of the wealthiest families in Chester during medieval times.

It’s been featured in both Prince Caspian and Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix. It was used as a double for the set of Hogwarts.

It is best to visit in late spring when it is in full bloom. The Castle Gardens are the perfect place to bask in the sun while enjoying a picnic or read a good book!

Nice walks along old city walls. Very nice next to river with plenty of eateries.

Not much to see, but if you can get inside the tower to see the medieval chapel, that is quite interesting and atmospheric

Well worth a visit, especially for special events, but note the restricted opening times, and at weekends only.

The Agricola tower with its ancient frescos in the chapel, is really interesting when a volunteer guide can point things out to you, plus there’s a good view from the top.

Super day out. All the volunteers were excellent with knowledge of the tower and castle. The reenactments of the parliamentarians and cavaliers was brilliant. They fired firearms from the period too. We parked at a park and ride then cycling along the canal which added to the days enjoyment.

Open weekend at the castle, courtesy of English Heritage

Great experience with lots of reenactment and displays. Best of all the people themselves with their friendly attitude and wealth of historical knowledge. Will be going again!!!
