Motte castle with two outer courts and which are surrounded by an outer ditch and ridge and furrow field systems. It is thought that the castle was built for William the Conqueror’s northern campaigns in 1069 and built to command the Fosse Way. The land was in the hands of the Earl of Meulan in the late 11th century and was later given to Nigel de Albany. Free to visit.

The quality of your experience at the place is highly dependent on the weather. Squelchy, muddy shoes aren’t fun.

But it is a place worth stopping at for about an 45mins to an hour max. Nothing built up at the location – it’s a big mound on which a watch tower of sorts once stood. The views are beautiful from the top of the ‘hill’ if the weather is clear. The windiness can be fun or concerning depending on the person. One must be able-bodied to a certain extent to make the short climb comfortably.

There are pubs closeby if you want to have a bite and a church right next to the site (which we didn’t have time to visit).

Not a bad place to stop by on a lazy, sunny Sunday afternoon if you’ve got nothing else to do.

We loved the peace here. No actual Castle. That is long gone. Just the sire where the Castle was. Lovely church right next to the site. Kids lived it. Bit of a different way to spend a Saturday evening. Go and get some chips from Brinklow fish and chip shop down the road – they are absolutely lovely!

Brinklow castle obviously has a lot of history and is very old. While there is not a lot to see, it is great to walk around. There is a really steep hill which is a load of fun to run up and down. Probably pretty scary to go down the hill on a sled if it has been snowing but each to their own. Pretty village as well.
