Had an awful experience here whilst staying in the locality. This venue was recommended as it had recently reopened following a complete refurbishment. Four of us were eating, starters took about 45 minutes to arrive and were burnt. Another long wait for mains , 3 of the 4 were beyond disappointing. 2 Sunday roasts that tasted smoky and burnt and contained black charred pieces of something unidentifiable. Also very dry, distinct lack of gravy. The Chicken Tikka Masala was inedible containing 4 small pieces of gristly chicken and with the rice smelling of cat’s pee, a definite sign it was not fit for consumption. Staff didn’t know what they were doing, what food was available or what drinks were on tap on the bar, no apologies for the poor standard of food. Avoid!!

We had an excellent meal at the Black Lion. First time under the new ownership. They obviously have a great chef! The waitress was lovely, friendly and efficient. I had a rump steak, the best I’ve had in a long time. Husband had the chicken, ham and leek pie which he enjoyed. Good wine and a good beer. We liked the decor and the service was good. We will certainly be back.

I had an absolutely fantastic experience at The Black Lion. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and full of character. Special mention has to go to Charley, who went above and beyond to make us feel at home—friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about making sure everyone was looked after.

The food was outstanding. I ordered the pork roast, and it was honestly one of the best I’ve ever had—perfectly cooked, tender, and full of flavor, with crispy crackling that was just divine. I also started with the onion soup, which was rich, comforting, and beautifully seasoned, exactly what you want on a cozy evening out.

Every detail, from the food to the service to the cozy ambiance, was spot on. I can’t recommend The Black Lion enough, and I’ll definitely be back. Thank you, Charley, for making the afternoon extra special!

Only had a few drinks, nice selection.

We didn’t eat but we did see food coming out and it looked very impressive.

Recently refurbished and it shows . Good standard etc .

On the whole, we’ll definitely be going back and we can’t wait for the rooms upstairs to be refurbished too.

I was initially hesitant to visit after reading some concerning reviews. My friend had booked this place for a catch-up lunch, and I almost backed out—but we decided to give it a try.

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted warmly and shown to our table. A friendly young staff member took our drinks order and was both helpful and knowledgeable.

While waiting for our food, I had a good look around—the décor was pleasant, and everything looked very clean and well-kept.

When the food arrived, I was genuinely surprised in the best way. I ordered the mac & cheese, while my friend had the fish finger ciabatta with fries. Both dishes were nicely presented and really tasty.

I couldn’t find anything to fault. I even asked a staff member about the previous negative reviews and was told they’ve recently brought in a new chef—which explains the noticeable improvement in food quality.

Prices were reasonable, the service came with smiles, and overall, I’d happily return.
