Castle on the Shropshire Union Canal

Guide To Beeston Castle

Built in 1220 by Ranulf de Blundeville, Earl of Chester, and paid for by a levy on his tenants. Beeston Castle was built on the summit of a step crag, it dominates the skyline for miles as it looks down over the Cheshire plain.

Its enclosure was irregular, but it had a very strong gatehouse. The walk from the canal is well worth the effort for the views alone but the castle ruins are fascinating themselves and include the 360ft. deep well in the courtyard.

Lovely place to visit. The views from the castle are incredible. Highly recommended, especially if you are English heritage member. Make sure to wander around the woods as plenty to see around there as well.

Visited Beeston Castle during our stay at nearby Peckforton Castle.

Parking is £4 for a daily ticket (free to members of English Heritage) and can be paid for with cash or card, at the machine.

Entry fee is expensive, costing £30 for two adults.

We chose to join English Heritage at the shop so entry fee was included and we were reimbursed for the car park costs.

The entrance to the castle is through the shop which sells memorabilia, toys, local mead, bottled spirits ice lollies and books. No cafe but there are toilets, which were clean and well kept.

There are two small exhibition rooms detailing the history of the castle, plus artefacts found at the site.

The walk up to the castle ruins is not leisurely but certainly worth the hike to take in the stunning views. Kudos to those parents who pushed prams/carried kids up the hill and over the bridge to the top….!

There are a couple of points of interest along the walk, a roundhouse, with a young tour guide stationed inside who was very knowledgeable and an area set up with tools used when the castle was intact.

We spent around an hour and a half walking around the site, we probably would have stayed longer had we packed a picnic, or if they had refreshments available.

Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead.

English heritage is the Custodians of Beeston Castle so as always the attraction is kepted immaculately. Staff are brilliant helpful and insightful. We are members so there wasn’t a cost for entrance just scanned our cards. There is parking opposite to the entrance this was also free to English Heritage members. Onsite there is a gift shop, toilets and a picnic area. Step.back in time and take a look at the bronze age house constructed by using technics and tools that they would of originally used. Beeston is a great place to visit with awesome views over the Cheshire countryside. Ideal for Adults and children alike. Big thankyou to the amazing staff that are always welcoming and helpful.

Not much of a castle with this one more ruins if anything. That being said I’m glad to have visited because of its history. The only gripe I have with these places is. They charge a little too much sometimes with what you get to see. There are student discounts and if you prefer to book I believe there is another discount on booking in advance. It’s more expensive to show up on the day to pay and the cafes are quite expensive also. All this being said. It’s a place I’d recommend maybe if you’re close by as I was currently staying in Stapeley so not very far from the castle. The caves were locked off also the woodland walkway was closed the day I visited due to gardening being done. I think if you’re looking to travel from castle to castle up and down the country, becoming a member of the English heritage would be advisable.

There’s not much left over from the castle, apart from some walls. Nice wievs. 4 stars because I got free entrance, otherwise max 3. It’s a 15 mins steep walk if you are taking small kids or elders. I recommend taking the picnic blanket and food because it’s not much to do there😉
