Guide To Brecon Castle

Permission is required from the owners of the hotel in whose grounds can be found the remains of the 11th century castle. The civil war saw the destruction of a large part of the castle, helped by the locals who did not wish to have the castle occupied by either side.

Hotel is definitely tired. They are starting renovations now, which are very much needed. Hopefully that improves things. The decor in the rooms was charming and there’s definitely a lot of potential to make the rooms very cosy with some aesthetic and fictional tweaks.

Ceiling in the room looked like it was about to fall in. None of the windows could be opened. There were also very awkward steps in the room around the bed area that just felt dangerous.

Huge drafts coming through the windows (it’s a good thing we like a cold room for sleeping!).

We had dinner here. The food was pretty good, but they were out of a lot of things (no salad).

I paid extra for breakfast, only to find out the morning of that there was no hot breakfast available that day. I can’t believe they didn’t offer me a refund! No way the tiny cereals they were offering for cold breakfast were worth the price of paying for breakfast.

The hotel is well located for walking around, and for the low price it’s a pretty good place to stay. There are beautiful river walks nearby and it’s close to town. There’s also a generous car park, which is a large reason we choose this hotel in the first place instead of a small bed and breakfast.

I hope the renovations can breathe some life into the hotel, because with a little work it will be quite nice.

Two stars for location because parking is difficult due to the layout of the car park.

Booked 3 rooms for 1 night. Arrived and no one on reception, no one at the bar but could hear noise from staff coming from somewhere. Eventually when someone came, checked in all three rooms but was given 1 room key. Other guests arrived 15 minutes later, same delay finding someone to give us room keys. Different person who couldn’t see what rooms had been allocated so disappeared to find the guy who had checked us in. Allocated rooms 30 and 31 for the family- assumed they would be next door to each other but no- in two different corridors! The bed linen and towels in our room 41, were clean but the carpet was grubby, the single glazed windows dirty and one was cracked.

Arrived for breakfast at 8.15 to be told the chef hadn’t turned in for work and there was no cooked breakfast only ‘continental ‘. Boxes of cereal, yoghurt, mostly rhubarb, toast and fruit. Two slot toaster which resulted in a queue by 8.45. No pastries on offer.

Refund for cooked breakfast promised. We’ll see how long that takes. Fawley Towers eat your heart out.

Only ever popped in for drinks and food, so can’t comment on the rooms.

A spectacular view from the terrace, a must visit for a cool pint in the summer. Great staff service, and our dinner was excellent!

Lovely location, views were fab, short walk to shops. The room was clean but really needs to be updated, missing handles on the chest of drawers, damp on walls with wallpaper peeling off, and desperately needing a luck of paint.

£5.60 a pint, £5.00 for vodka and £3.50 a can of pop, bit expensive. Food was disappointing. Breakfast was barely warm, and had to wait half an hour for evening meals.

It is a cashless hotel which we weren’t aware of until we were there.

Nice hotel, with a slightly quirky edge, and convenient location right near the centre of brecon. Had a lovely room with a big four poster bed which was really comfortable. Breakfast was very good and you got everything you’d expect. Nice bar and lounge area too. Staff were friendly and helpful. It was definitely good value for money and would stay again.
