The works were built into the embankment of the Swansea Canal in 1838 and comprised the longest row of blast furnaces in the world. One of the earliest uses of anthracite in a furnace utilising the pioneer hot-blast technique developed locally. Alongside was built what was the largest tinplate works globally.
