World’s first railway station 1807 digital image of the Oystermouth Railway at Tawe ferry Swansea

Planned & partly built as the Oystermouth Canal but built as a railway to use a Trevithick locomotive. Economic failure led to one wagon being converted to carry passengers.

Downloadable digital image of a gouache painted reconstruction of the world’s earliest scheduled public passenger service in 1807 at the first stopping place ‘or station’ in Wind Street ,Swansea, alongside the early public houses and other buildings serving the passenger ferry across the mouth of the River Tawe. Behind the coach a dockside line led to interchange sidings on the Swansea Canal. Original artwork by Stephen Hughes. For personal use. For other uses contact the artist: Send Message.
