The Making of a Railway
Between 1894 and 1899, the Great Central Railway constructed a line from Nottingham to London Marylebone. During this time, S.W.A. Newton, a young photographer from Leicester, captured a wide variety of activity, scenery, and characters related to the railway’s construction and operation. Newton’s photographs provide a unique insight into how the railway was built and the people involved. L.T.C. Rolt provides additional context and commentary to complement the pictures, resulting in a rare and historically significant photographic documentary.
