Although they hired experts for the major steelwork, Jim, Sue, and their son Tim completed the rest of the boat’s fittings. Jim even learned to operate and maintain a rare Seffle semi-diesel engine and, later, a magnificent Kelvin. Despite having no prior experience with restoring old boats, Jim (a classics teacher), Sue (a primary school headteacher), and Tim (a children’s book illustrator) learned as they went along. Their efforts resulted in a beautifully restored piece of history passed down to the next generation after being in the Hutchinsons’ care for 30 years. As a result, the Owl’s future is now secure.
OWL – The Story of a Josher
In 1989, Jim Hutchinson and his wife Sue spontaneously exchanged their new narrow boat for Owl, an old historic ‘josher’ from 1928 that needed rescue. This book details their experience managing a major restoration, including the mistakes, challenges, and unique characters they encountered. This book tells the story of Owl -the history having been thoroughly researched, including its days as a cargo boat in the 1930s and 1940s, its time with British Waterways for maintenance, its period as a rental and then camping boat, its sale to several private owners, and its eventual decline until the Hutchinsons purchased it.
