Downloadable digital image of a reconstruction painting by Stephen Hughes of the northern terminal basin of the Swansea Canal built in 1796-98. A higher level canal water feeder also drove the blast in the dockside ironworks. Early railway inclines built under the terms of the Swansea Canal’s Parliamentary Act led to mountaintop limestone, silica-sand and rotten-stone quarries and other railways to collieries.
