The Swansea Canal crossed two earlier railways to the navigable River Tawe on aqueducts constructed during building in 1794-96.

Lock 1 & the Swansea Canal were built on a causeway over the Pottery or Foundry Millpool, which had originally been built to power the ‘Lower Copper Works’ or Cambrian Copperworks, Swansea, Reservoir in 1720.
