Canals in the 1950s-1970s

In the 1950s-1970s, J.G. Parkinson and his wife explored the British canal and waterway system on their cruiser, GREY DOVE. During their travels, Jack captured over 9000 colour photographs, numerous black and white photos, and cine film.  A selection of about 285 photos has been chosen for this book, showcasing canals from the south of England to the Scottish lowlands, encompassing both narrow and wide navigations over a 25-year period.

These photos offer a glimpse into a bygone era, as many scenes have changed completely in the 50-70 years since they were taken. Although a few places remain unchanged, the photos will be fascinating for canal and transport enthusiasts, industrial archaeologists, and anyone interested in exploring our industrial and rural past from over half a century ago.

This collection holds immense historical value, and all the colour photos are now safely stored in the Online Transport Archive.
