This book examines the differences in traditions between Lancashire and Yorkshire and delves into their origins through boat, church, and house decoration across Europe, comparing them to what was discovered on the canal. The detailed description of the paintwork at Hodson’s boatyard and examples of designs and colours used at other yards on the canal provides a better appreciation of the tradition. With this understanding, it is hoped that the tradition can be revived and utilized on today’s canal.
Brightwork
The Leeds & Liverpool Canal had a unique tradition of colorful painted decorations on working boats. Despite being discontinued in the early 1960s, its origins and styles were not documented until recently by two authors. Mike Clarke, who has written extensively about the canal’s history, and Sam Yates, a former boat builder who did the decorative paintings at Hodson’s Boatyard near Blackburn for several years before the yard closed in 1964, are the perfect authors for this task.
