A Canal Boy’s Story

Jim James was born in the 1940s on a canal during a time when commercial carrying was still prevalent. From his earliest recollections, he assisted his parents in working the boats. Due to a lack of schooling, he was unable to read, write, or perform basic addition.

However, he compensated for this deficiency with an exceptional memory, enabling him to identify individual letters of the alphabet and numbers, but not to read or calculate. Jim shares his personal story of how he overcame these challenges, built a family, and secured a job that did not require him to read or write.
