A Boot Up the Shropshire Union Canal

This guidebook offers leisure walks along the canal, focusing on its early stages. The walks around Brewood, Lapley and Wheaton Aston, High Onn and Church Eaton, Cowley and Wood Eaton, Gnosall and Doley Common, Norbury Junction, Loynton Moss and Grub Street, Shebdon, Knighton and High Offley, Goldstone and Cheswardine, and Market Drayton and Tyrley Locks cater to families, friends, or individuals looking for a gentle stroll or a longer walk, and showcase the area’s history, people, and landscape.

The Shropshire Union Canal is a 66-mile waterway that stretches from Wolverhampton to Ellesmere Port, with 44 locks and a drop of over 300 feet. It is commonly called the “Shroppie” and is formed by the union of three canals: the Birmingham & Liverpool Junction Canal, the Chester Canal, and the Ellesmere Canal (Wirral Line). The Birmingham & Liverpool Junction Canal was the last narrow boat canal built during the canal construction period and has become a favorite spot for pleasure boaters since the working narrow boats disappeared. It was nationalized in 1947 and designated a ‘Cruiseway’ in 1968, ensuring its long-term future.

The guidebook includes maps, photographs, and helpful information, and many of the walks have pubs along the route. It is an ideal souvenir for visitors to the Shropshire Union Canal, packed with colorful descriptions of the area’s outstanding scenery.
