England was once home to an extensive canal and navigation system that spanned many thousands of miles, connecting various areas such as collieries, iron mines, steelworks, towns, and villages. However, due to a lack of trade, many of these canals were closed down from the beginning of the twentieth century onwards. The Midlands, which is considered the heart of Britain’s canal network, lost many canals, but so did many other areas of the country.
Abandoned & Vanished Canals of England
A brief history of a selection of England’s lost canals, from the Adelphi Canal to the Woodeaves Canal, is provided by Andy Wood in this interesting book.
