Ropework – Knots & Fenders
Decorative Ropework is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation of boat people. It is a form of art that involves the creation of intricate designs using ropes and knots. This practical skill was developed by boatmen who needed to protect their boats from damage caused by collisions with other boats or the canal walls.
They used ropes to create fenders that would cushion the impact and prevent damage to their boats. Over time, this practical use of ropes evolved into an art form that is now highly prized for its decorative value.
