Castle on the Llangollen Canal

Guide To Castell Dinas Bran

Half mile north, on top of 1100 ft. mountain. This was an important fortress defending Wales from the English. Built by Eilseg, Prince of Powys, it was later abandoned by De Warenne who decided to build a new castle at Holt near the River Dee. The ruins remain stark against the skyline, the walk is worth it for those who have the stamina.

We walked up as a group. The walk is short and steep but some great views at the top and cool views worth an explore. A picnic at the top is nice too as there are areas to shield from the wind. Nice pub near the car park.

Walked up early in the morning hoping for a sunrise. I was not disappointed. The climb up is OK. I should imagine for most people. The views from the top are incredible. As are the ruins themselves. I can imagine it gets quite busy so for the photographer the early morning or late evening is the best. Definitely worth a visit.

I visited on a weekday morning to enjoy the sun and fresh air. I wasn’t sure if there was a parking lot, so I asked a kind farmer and found out there was a small space. I drove up a narrow road for a few minutes and parked on a side road. The climb was easy!! Grown ups would reach the summit in about 30 minutes. I wore casual shoes, but it was a bit slippery, so I think hiking boots would be more suitable. At the summit, definitely, visitors would be impressed by the stunning view. If you are coming by car, it would be better to park at the car park in Llangollen on the weekends. It was a place worth visiting!!

It is a stunning beauty. The views you get on the way and on the top are amazing. The top is reasonably flat with plenty of space to walk around and view all around. There are a few remaining walls of the castle that give it an ancient feel.

Please do not follow the Google maps, park in the town, and then walk to the top. It’s a medium hike. One can reach the top in under 30 minutes.

Beautiful view of whole town and the limestone hills surrounding it. The climb was very easy and can be done by anyone with average health. You would need to cross field of sheep so don’t forget to put your dog on leash.

Would recommend to pack some food with you, would highly recommend to have a seat beside the castle and enjoy the snack with beautiful views surrounding it.
