Berkhamsted Castlethe remains of one of the string of castles built by William the Conqueror along the route taken into London supposedly the site were he was offered the English crown in 1066. Beautiful area, home to the ruins of a wonderful castle. Entrance is free and grounds are well-kept. I recommend visiting if you are in the area. There are information signs and a website to let you know what everything is, as well as a trail to walk around the entire grounds, between the two moats.

View it as 2 activities. A nature walk around the outer bank, including a hero, ducks, coots and moorhens. A ruined castle run around including climbing the motte for a great view. A plus for train lovers!

Lovely bit of history! Shame they plundered the stone in the 16th century but the gardens well kept and it’s beautiful!

Didn’t really know what to expect just had a look at places to visit on the English heritage app while visiting family. Was great for a short visit kids can really run about, not much here so don’t expect more than a friendly person at the gate to greet you and some great scenery. Worth a visit if you are passing.
