Two cross Pennine canal routes now closed.

Two of the three canals crossing the Pennines have now been shut by culvert collapses after the Rochdale Canal was closed near Hebden Bridge on 28th of October. The Leeds and Liverpool was closed to through traffic by a breach near Blackburn on September 11th, but is due to be reopened on 23rd of November, see our news report. UPDATE 25/11/2013  – L&L now re-opened.

Hebden Bridge

A culvert has failed beneath the Rochdale Canal between Brearley Upper Lock 6  and Broadbottom Lock 7 in Mytholmroyd, downstream of Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, resulting in the closure of the waterway.

The Canal & River Trust (CRT) has closed the canal to navigation in this area while it investigates, plans and then carries out the necessary repairs.  It is too early to say how long the closure will be but it is already obvious that this is going to be a complex task.-

The culvert has a strong flow of water in it from the stream that it carries and the site is surrounded by housing, making access difficult.  CRT needs to give careful thought to how best to approach this and it is likely to be a couple of weeks before it can be more definitive about a programme.

While the canal is closed at Mytholmroyd passages across the Pennines via the Rochdale Canal will not be possible.  However, the canal is open either side until after Christmas when the planned lock gate replacement work will commence.
