Waterways
"Waterways" is a Trent Television Production
featuring interviews with people who worked the canals during their
heyday and decline as well as modern day merchants who are using the
network now. The film is a celebration of canal heritage. "Waterways"
includes the reconstruction of skills such as horse handling and boat
building. Canal craft features in interviews and demonstrations by
master craftsmen in boat painting and rope work. "Waterways" also
takes a look at canal culture, featuring the traditional costume of the
boatmen and the families. The film shows some famous traditional craft
in action from the old horse boats to steamers and diesel powered craft
- even a reconstruction of how iceboats were used to keep the frozen
canals open. "Waterways" features archive footage and photographs
from the early days of boating taken from the British Waterways and The
Waterways Trust collections.
The DVD includes original folk music about the
waterways and is presented and voiced by former Blue Peter presenter and
boat enthusiast John Noakes. "Waterways" is endorsed by The
Waterways Trust and Inland Waterways Association. Proceeds from sales of
the film will fund continuing canal restoration projects.
The inland waterways were once the arteries of
commercial Britain. Join John Noakes on an historical trip with the
unsung heroes of the industrial revolution - the boatmen and, of course
their craft. "Waterways" looks at the revolutionary concepts
pioneered by one of the Midlands most famous sons James Brindley and how
his vision, and that of men like him, helped created one of the greatest
commercial networks that Britain has ever seen.
"Waterways" is 65 minutes in duration and
available on DVD and VHS from Trent Television Production and associated
