The Upper Thames winds through watermeadows, below Oxford and on to Hampton Palace and the world famous London river-front. The Rivers Lee and Stort meander through suprisingly rural Hertfordshire.

Canal Boat Hire on the Grand Union Canal
The Grand Union Canal has big locks, and lots of them! Leaving the River Thames at Brentford it climbs over fifty locks up into the beautiful Chiltern hills. It descends for a while, then climbs again to a new summit in Birmingham, 137 miles and 166 locks. Boatmen used to do it in five days but allow well over a week if you want to get any sleep!

The Kennet & Avon Navigation cuts through wooded hills and the famous Avon Gorge on its way from Bristol and then meanders up to Bath. The canal climbs the Caen flight of locks to Devizes and runs amidst rolling hillsides along the Vale of Pewsey towards Hungerford to descend through pasturelands, woods and watermeadows to Reading and the junction with the River Thames.
