Canal hire firms on the canals of Northern England & Scotland
The Inland Waterways of Northern England and lowland Scotland were at the heart of
the Industrial Revolution,
linking the ports of Hull and Liverpool to the manufacturing
centres of
Manchester and Leeds, and linking Glasgow and Edinburgh to the central
Scottish manufacturing areas. They made fortunes for owners and merchants, carrying raw materials to the developing
cities and finished goods to markets and the coast. They also provided
cross country links between the east and west coast, avoiding the need
to brave the open seas.
Now most of the industries are silent, and hiring a narrowboat on one of these canals opens up access some of the most impressive scenery in Britain. The majestic Pennine hills are crossed by the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and the Rochdale Canal. The recently reopened Scottish Lowland Canals have reunited Glasgow and Edinburgh via the amazing Falkirk Wheel. And though the Lancaster Canal has lost some of its isolation since the opening of the Ribble Link across the River Ribble, but it still meanders peacefully bounded by the Irish Sea and the Pennine Hills, hopefully one day to again reach the edge of the Lake District at Kendal.
