Surveys vary in scope and purpose, the marine surveyor will advise. It is sensible to have a full Condition Survey on any boat you are considering purchasing. A survey may be required by an insurer before offering cover, they may accept an out of the water Hull Survey provided the boat has a valid Boat Safety Scheme certificate. Some people buying a new boat will engage a surveyor to oversee the build, and to offer expert advice on features, methods and materials etc.

A Boat Safety Scheme certificate does not give any indication of the overall condition of a boat or its value, it only shows compliance on the date of issue with a set of minimum safety standards. Similarly new boats with a CE mark for the Regional Craft Directive have only been found to comply with European basic construction standards.
