Although most modern canal boats have steel hulls and cabins, timber is traditionally used for fitting out and lining out the interior. A number of joinery firms and craftspersons specialise in canal boat fitting and supplying features such as cratches, doors and cabinet work. The quality of a canal boat fit out is usually obvious from the timber materials used and the style and precision with which the work has been carried out. Many older boats use tongue and grooved planking for cabin sides and ceilings but hardwood veneered ply is now commonly used.

Larger projects may require that the canal boat is moved to a convenient location for the contractor and their woodworking equipment, but some joiners will work on a mobile basis, usually measuring up and installing at your location but carrying out work in their workshop. Suppliers of features such as canal boat cratches and doors will often work to your measurements and expect you to do the fitting.
