Marine Insurance is compulsory on boats on most British inland waterways. Firms who specialise in this type of insurance are listed below. Canal boat insurance differs from other marine insurance in a number of ways. For instance most marine policies expect boats to be laid up out of the water during the winter months, narrowboat policies must offer year round in water cover.

As with car insurance, annual premiums are dependant upon the level of cover provided, such as comprehensive or third party only, and on the replacement cost of the boat, in the case of fully comprehensive insurance. Many will offer no claims bonuses. Policies may be dependant on the canal boat having a valid Boat Safety Scheme Certificate and in the case of older boats a recent marine surveyors report may be required. Most policies will limit cover to non tidal waters in the UK and will not cover such activities as towing other boats, or towing water skiers!
