COOLING SYSTEM FAULTFINDING CHECKLIST
There are so many variations possible it is very difficult to provide a single fault finding procedure, so I list some checks under the system types:-
ANY RAW WATER FAILURE
Is inlet clear? Is sea inlet turned on?
Has something covered the sea inlet outside the hull?
Are any oil coolers clear?
Have any hoses collapsed or started to de-laminate?
Do you have any air leaks in the suction side – are the hose clips tight?
Is the raw water pump serviceable? – impeller faulty, body worn, cover loose or bowed.
If applicable is the raw water pump drive belt serviceable?
If applicable are any heat exchanger cores blocked?
If wet exhaust is the exhaust fully or partially blocked? (Does it hiss more than usual?)
INDIRECT SYSTEM FAILURE
Check all left.
Does the engine have coolant in it?
Has a hose burst or started leaking?
Is the engine water pump serviceable?
Is the engine water pump drive belt serviceable?
Has an engine core plug or drain plug/tap failed?
Is your skin tank or keel cooler large enough?
PRESSURISED SYSTEM FAILURE
Check all left.
Do you have a pressure cap?
Is the pressure cap serviceable?
Is the expansion tank large enough?
WATERPUMP PROBLEMS - HOW NOT TO SOLVE THEM!
This is an example of how to get ignored when you want help. The more detail you can give me, the more help you are likely to get.  Click to see answer
EXPANSION TANK
I have a nearly new narrow boat fitted with a Vetus 4.17 42 h.p. engine. Over a period of running the water in the cooling expansion bottle fills as it should. When the engine cools however not all of this returns to the engine. Click to see answer
FITTING CALORIFIER TO LISTER JP3M
I am considering installing a calorifier to the above engine which is keel cooled with a traditional hand lever to control the temperature. Can you advise me where I should make the in and out connections to the calorifier, and if you consider that the flow through the calorifier needs to be pump assisted. Click to see answer
REMOVING PUMP IMPELLERS
I attended one of your courses last year and was shown how to remove impellers. This season I tried it for myself and was obviously a little heavy handed as I broke off the heads of two brass screws which retain the end plate to the impeller housing. Click to see answer
PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
I inadvertently gently tapped the end of the pressure relief valve on my calorifier and the valve started chattering and continued to do so until I switched off the pressure pump and the accumulator pressure had dissipated. Click to see answer
BMC 2.5 THERMOSTAT
While checking the water system for my BMC 2.5 diesel engine I discovered that there was no thermostat. Could you please let me know your views on whether I should have a thermostat or not.  Click to see answer
KEEL COOLING OVERHEATS
I hope you can help. We have a 60ft narrow boat with 1300cc Mitsubushi and a single side keel cooling tank. Although is adequate for canal work and only overheats when the prop gets weeded up.  Click to see answer
NARROWBOAT COOLING PROBLEM
I have a 3 cyl Lister Alpha engine in a 50 ft narrowboat. The cooling has always been a bit dodgy from new, but now it is getting a lot worse. The primary problem (I think) is the skin tank, small for a 32bhp engine. Click to see answer
VOLVO COOLING PROBLEM
This question relates to a Volvo MD range with intermittent cooling water failure and apparent internal "furring up". Click to see answer
VOLVO COOLING PROBLEM
I wondered if you could tell me if it is possible to source an 'in-line' thermostat of some sort, which would allow me to divert water to the cooling circuit once it reaches a suitable temperature. Click to see answer
NOVICE ENGINE COOLING QUERY 1
We have recently bought a 48 ' narrowboat, we are complete novices regarding the maintenance of the boat and would appreciate any help on offer, particularly the engine and its maintenance. I have not been able to find the water pump, any ideas? Click to see answer
NOVICE ENGINE COOLING QUERY 2
How do I know whether the water is pumping around the engine as I assume it should, given that there is a radiator ( in the narrowboat) which is connected to the engine which sometimes gets hot and other times does not? Click to see answer
OVERHEATING ENGINE - VOLVO
My Volvo engine was overheating and I discovered that raw water was not reaching the water pump, and in fact the rubber impeller was quite worn but not broken up completely. A new impeller has been fitted but still no water passed to the pump ... Click to see answer
OVERHEATING ENGINE - BMC
My Narrow boat has a BMC 1.5 diesel engine with a 'Bowman' marinising kit and it has suddenly developed overheating problems. Water seems to be coming out the exhaust (as it is meant to) however the engine still seems to be overheating... Click to see answer
