Canvas and plastic based covers and canopies are used to cover and protect the front and rear deck areas of canal boats. A narrowboat cratch is the triangular board or panel which sits at the front of the open hold or deck area. Most modern narrowboats keep the weather out of this area with a flexible removable cover of some sort. Covers may include transparent or translucent sections for vision and to allow light through.

Some narrowboats also have a removable cover over the rear deck and steering position giving full weather protection for the steerer in the event of bad weather.
